About
Hi, I’m Toy.
I’m LaToyia C. Jackson, MS (Psychology), MBA. I’m an author, researcher and educator, and Beneath the Balance is where I explore money and self-worth through psychology, faith, and the realities of an imperfect life.
Confession: when I was young I rolled my eyes at anything finance. I literally walked out of my first economics class. So I’m not here as somebody who was born knowing how the game works. I’m here as somebody who had to learn it, and who noticed how much of what we feel about money was never really about money.
That’s the space under the number. It’s the beliefs, emotions, circumstances and measures of success beneath our financial lives. It’s why you can be making progress and still feel behind, or spend money trying to look okay, or treat rest like something you have to earn.
What I believe
- Your worth was never up for a vote. Not by income, productivity, appearance, recognition or achievement. You bear the image of God, and that came first.
- You cannot budget your way out of trauma. Practical skills matter, and they land better once we understand what is happening inside us and around us.
- Systems are real and so is your next move. Credit, wages, taxes, housing and history shape how we feel. Naming that is not blame. And every “here’s how the system works” deserves a “here’s what you can do.”
- Faith is not a formula. God is not a vending machine, wealth is not a fruit of the Spirit, and hardship is not proof that God left. No prosperity gospel here, and no poverty theology either.
- Lament is biblical. Being honest with God about anger, grief and disappointment is not unbelief. It’s all over the Psalms.
What I bring
A master’s degree in psychology, an MBA, my faith as a follower of Yeshua, and a gift for explaining things clearly, with some humor and a lot of candor. I write and teach. I am not a therapist, counselor or psychologist, and I am not a financial advisor, so nothing here replaces care from a licensed professional. What I can do is help you understand what’s going on and point you toward your next faithful step.
